Cedar
Northern white cedar which grows from northern Michigan to Northern
Maine is the best wood for canoe and small boat building. Atlantic
white cedar from Virginia and the Carolinas is an acceptable substitute,
but it is a little more brittle and tends to split. Whenever possible,
vertical grain stock should be used for planking as flat sawn stock
will warp and buckle. Most canoes built after 1915 were planked
with western red cedar because of the difficulty in obtaining good
quality vertical grain white cedar. The situation today has not
improved.
