The Nord Vinden is an attractive craft inspired by the canoe yawl
Ethel designed by George Holmes in 1888. John Leathers included
the Ethel in his book "Sail and Oar" published by
Conway Marine Press in 1982.
The Nord Vinden ("North Wind" in Swedish) is 13' L.O.A.
with a 4'6" beam. She draws about 6" with centerboard up and
22" with it down. With a load capacity in excess of 500 lbs., the
Nord Vinden will carry two people and their gear for day trips
or cruising.
The basic version of the Nord Vinden is a sloop-rigged affair with
102. sq. ft. between the gunter-rigged main and the roller-furled jib. It
can also be set up with the more traditional balanced lug yawl rig or a
gunter yawl rig with a jib. The sail area of either rig will be about 100. sq. ft.
Nord Vinden is very stable and seaworthy. Her versatility is a boon
to daytrippers and overnight campers; and her popularity is growing as more
and more sailors opt for a trailerable craft.
